What Is Dermabrasion Used for?
If you have thick skin or deep wrinkles, dermabrasion can obtain optimal improvement by softening sharp irregularities. Patients often choose dermabrasion to treat the following concerns:
- Vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines)
- Acne scars and scars from injuries
- Sun damage
- Rough texture
Does Dermabrasion Hurt?
For optimal comfort during treatment, Dr. Jarmuz may give you a sedative to help you relax. She will also apply a local anesthetic to the skin. During the procedure she will carefully remove layers of damaged skin. Depending on your skin type and the areas being treated, dermabrasion will probably take 30 minutes to about an hour.

How Long Does It Take for Dermabrasion to Heal?
You will be able to return to work after 2 weeks. After your dermabrasion treatment, you will be sent home with ointment to protect and moisturize your skin as it heals. At first, your face will be red and swollen. Scabs will form and, when they peel away, the new skin will be slightly pink. After 3 to 6 weeks, your skin tone should be back to normal. Although wearing sunscreen should always be a part of your routine, it is critical after dermabrasion.
What Is the Difference Between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a gentle, no-downtime skin rejuvenation treatment that addresses surface-level concerns, which commonly include:
- Dull coloring
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Dark spots
- Shallow acne scars
- Rough texture
Dermabrasion provides more significant results and therefore requires a recovery period.
How Many Dermabrasion Treatments Do I Need?
While patient goals and needs vary, in general a single dermabrasion treatment is enough to provide desired improvements. We may spot treat certain areas once healing is complete.
Are There Nonsurgical Alternatives to Dermabrasion?
If you not ready for surgery, Dr. Jarmuz offers several medical spa services such as the HydraFacial® that can improve the condition of your skin without downtime. She may suggest treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, injectable fillers, laser skin resurfacing, or chemical peels to reduce wrinkles, discoloration, and scars.
