Have you ever wondered what the difference is between BOTOX and Dysport? These injectable wrinkle relaxers are both popular at Buckhead Facial Plastic Surgery for achieving a smoother, more youthful appearance. But how do you know which one is right for you?
In this blog post, I’ll shed some light on the subtle differences between these two injectable treatments.
Targeting Wrinkles: The Similarities Between BOTOX & Dysport
Both BOTOX and Dysport belong to a class of injectables called neuromodulators. This group also includes Daxxify®, XEOMIN®, and Jeuveau®. They share the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles when contracted. This allows the overlying skin to relax and smooth out, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Both BOTOX and Dysport are used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (expression lines).
Common treatment areas include:
- Forehead
- Frown lines (between the eyebrows)
- Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
- Bunny lines (on the nose)
- Marionette lines (corners of mouth to chin)
- Smokers lines around the lips
Neuromodulators can also be used to shrink masseter muscles for a slimmer lower face, to smooth out a dimpled chin, and to reduce prominent neck bands (platysmal bands).

The Power of Particle Size
While they share the same treatment objectives, BOTOX and Dysport achieve them in slightly different ways. The key difference lies in the size and composition of the injectable particles. BOTOX has a larger molecule size, making it ideal for targeted injections in smaller areas. Dysport, conversely, has a thinner consistency and diffuses more readily. This can be beneficial for treating larger areas.
Tailoring Treatment to Your Needs
So, which one is right for you? The answer depends on your concerns, goals, and facial anatomy. During a consultation, I carefully assess your concerns and desired outcome, considering factors such as the location and severity of your wrinkles.
- BOTOX may be a good choice for targeted wrinkle reduction in smaller areas, such as frown lines, due to its precise action.
- For treating broader areas such as the forehead with numerous wrinkles, Dysport may be the better option due to its diffusing properties.
The Treatment Timeline: When To Expect Results
Both BOTOX and Dysport take a few days to work their magic:
- Dysport: 2 to 3 days
- BOTOX: 3 to 5 days
How Long Does Dysport Last vs. BOTOX?
The longevity of your results can vary depending on the product used and your individual metabolism. Here’s a general timeframe:
- Dysport: May last up to 5 months
- BOTOX: Lasts up to 4 months
Once the effects start to fade, you can return for a touch-up treatment to maintain your youthful look.
Dysport vs. BOTOX: Comparing the Price
While Dysport is priced lower per unit than BOTOX, the total cost is often similar. Dysport requires 2.5 to 3 times more units to achieve the same results as BOTOX in many areas of the face. So, although each Dysport unit is less expensive, the higher number of units needed may balance out the cost. The total price and best value depend on the number of units required for your treatment plan.
Achieving Natural-Looking Results
At Buckhead Facial Plastic Surgery, we prioritize natural-looking results. We take a conservative approach to injectables, using minimal doses of BOTOX or Dysport to make sure your facial expressions remain natural while effectively minimizing wrinkles.
