Are You a Good CoolSculpting® Candidate?

Woman researching CoolSculpting in Atlanta, GA.

When CoolSculpting revolutionized the nonsurgical fat reduction world more than a decade ago, many people wondered about just how much fat could be reduced by this innovative device. We still hear questions from patients considering CoolSculpting at our Buckhead practice about whether they can benefit from the treatment.

To answer that question, it’s best to ask yourself a series of other questions. Before doing that, however, it helps to understand how CoolSculpting works and how it’s different from other non-invasive fat reduction treatments that use different technologies.

What Does “Freeze the Fat” Mean?

CoolSculpting emerged from the observation made by researchers who saw how the cheeks of a child sucking on a popsicle lost volume. Their research led to a process called cryolipolysis, which uses cold temperatures to break down fat cells. It works because fat cells are uniquely susceptible to the effects of cold, unlike other types of cells. While the fat cells freeze, the skin and other structures are spared from injury. You can see the results of CoolSculpting in our gallery of before-and-after photos featuring some of our actual patients.

Questions to Ask Before Getting CoolSculpting

The answers to these questions will help you determine if you’re a good CoolSculpting candidate:

Do you exercise and eat a healthy diet but still have areas of pinchable fat?

Leading a healthy, active lifestyle that includes working out regularly and limiting high-calorie foods is a worthwhile endeavor. But it can be frustrating if those efforts aren’t enough to reduce localized fat bulges. If this sounds familiar, CoolSculpting may be the solution for you. If you’re interested in building muscle tone and reducing fat, we also offer EMSCULPT® treatments at our practice.

Are you close to your ideal weight?

CoolSculpting isn’t a weight loss treatment. The best candidates for CoolSculpting are either at or close to the weight they intend to maintain.

Is it excess fat or excess skin that you notice?

Some men and women considering CoolSculpting actually have excess skin that has lost its elasticity, rather than excess fat. Or they may have both. CoolSculpting isn’t a skin-tightening procedure. In fact, reducing fat in areas where there’s loose skin can make the appearance of excess skin worse because it won’t adapt to the new contours.

Do you want to get rid of a double chin?

Even though many people think about CoolSculpting as a treatment for the midsection, flanks, or thighs, specialized applicators can address excess fat in virtually any area of the body. That includes under the chin. The appearance of a double chin is one of the most common aesthetic concerns shared by both women and men. Fat that causes double chins may be an inherited trait or the result of weight gain. The CoolMini™ applicator fits snugly under the chin and is a nonsurgical option to reduce submental fat—fat that’s under the chin.

Do you have the patience to wait 3 months to see results?

The CoolSculpting process gradually kills fat cells, which are then removed from the body through its lymphatic system. This process takes some time, and the results emerge gradually. If you want immediate results and can take some time off to recover, neck liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat.
