4 Ways to Improve Your Neck’s Appearance

Woman in Atlanta, GA who has had an Ultherapy® treatment to help with skin tightening on her neck

Necks tend to show signs of aging earlier than in other areas. Not surprisingly, patients concerned about their necks’ appearance want to know the best way to minimize wrinkles and tighten sagging skin. The truth is there is no single option that’s best for everyone, which is why we offer a number of treatments, including Ultherapy® for skin tightening at Buckhead Facial Plastic Surgery near Atlanta.

Many men and women who are self-conscious about their necks aren’t really ready for plastic surgery and ask about nonsurgical alternatives to a neck lift or facelift surgery. In this blog post, I’ll describe 3 nonsurgical treatments we use to improve the appearance of patients’ necks, along with submental liposuction—liposuction below the chin.

Not a One-Size-Fits-All Approach

From skin tightening to fillers to fat removal, anti-aging treatments for the neck have various goals. For some patients, combining procedures yields the best results. Here are some of the most effective methods to create the sculpted neck and well-defined jawline that both women and men find universally attractive.

Ultherapy

What sets Ultherapy apart from virtually all other nonsurgical skin tightening treatments is its ability to lift as well as tighten the skin. Using the power of ultrasound energy, Ultherapy delivers heat to the layer of fibrous tissue that surrounds facial muscles, which are repositioned during facelift surgery. Heat stimulates the production of new collagen, creating firmer skin with increased elasticity. It’s an ideal treatment for women and men whose necks are showing early signs of sagging. People of all skin tones can get Ultherapy, and the procedure doesn’t require any downtime. Results appear gradually—something that’s true of most nonsurgical skin tightening procedures—taking about 3 to 6 months to see the final outcome.

Profound

Combining microneedling with radiofrequency (RF), Profound is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive treatment that triggers the body’s natural healing response, producing hyaluronic acid, elastin, and collagen—the building blocks that keep skin firm and elastic. Microneedling can be used as a standalone procedure, but RF energy enhances the results. Microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin’s surface, and the thermal energy associated with RF treatments heats the deeper layers of skin. It’s effective for all skin types with minimal risk of hyperpigmentation.

Sculptra® Aesthetic

It may seem odd to think of using a filler to improve the neck’s appearance, but Sculptra works differently than hyaluronic acid fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. Sculptra is formulated using a natural substance called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which helps rebuild collagen and create a “lifted” appearance wherever it’s injected. It’s ideal for minimizing horizontal neck lines—often referred to these days as “tech neck” because they’re associated with the tendency to look down at smartphones or other mobile devices throughout the day.

Liposuction Under the Chin

Besides sagging skin and wrinkles, the appearance of a double chin is another common concern. This issue is often an inherited trait that has nothing to do with a patient’s overall weight, which can make it even more frustrating. There are a few nonsurgical fat reduction treatments designed to reduce submental (below the chin) fat, but frankly, liposuction is the best option. It creates immediate results, is competitively priced, and involves minimal downtime.
